Folklore provide the perfect music for a range of venues and occasions where a romantic, atmospheric, sophisticated and eloquent sound is required. They perform a wide range of classic jazz instrumentals, along with traditional folk airs and tunes, timeless classics, and French café and continental melodies, but all celebrating the diverse and beautiful sound of the violin.
This adaptable ensemble perform as a duo, trio or four piece, by adding vocals, drums or double bass to suit requirements. For today's performance, Folklore comprises JC on guitar, mandolin and vocals, his wife Kathy on violin, and Angelina on guitar and vocals.
Highly regarded and well known on the Island, siblings JC and Angelina Grimshaw have been playing together since they were young, and grabbing audiences' attention with their performances at folk, blues and jazz clubs and festivals in the UK and Europe.
JC Grimshaw is an exceptional song writer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, writing songs that are full of flair, fire, and colour. He has recorded 4 solo albums plus 2 albums with his sister, Angelina. JC performs in a variety of duos, trios and bands playing guitars, mandolins, harmonica, ukulele and Hawaiian lap guitar with a deep-rooted passion. He blends earthy folk and finger picking-blues, with a voice to match. JC is a polished professionalism but he is refreshingly authentic, and brimming full of raw energy.
Isle Of Wight lone wolf Angelina is a self-taught songwriter and plays solo gigs as well as coming together with fellow musicians as a band, and of course duo performances with her brother, JC. Angelina’s distinctive, fiery, sensuous voice moves easily from raw vintage blues to shimmering jazz with finger-picking and hammering rhythm parlour guitar. Angelina taught herself to sing by listening to to her heroes, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and field recordings of country blues singers working on the land. Developing her own song-writing style inspired by the likes of Karen Dalton and Charlie Patton.
Kathy Grimshaw, JC's wife, is a stunning violin player, blending the soulful swing of jazz with the earthy melodies of folk. Her playing is fluid and expressive, moving seamlessly between improvisational jazz riffs and traditional folk tunes. With a versatile style, Kathy captivates audiences with a sound that's both nostalgic and fresh.
